She is originally from Nagoya, Japan. Her passion for learning about alternative, holistic medicine, and plant-based macrobiotic nutrition began when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1993. This illness challenged her to consider the relationships between her lifestyle, attitude, food choices, and how nature connects with her physical, emotional, and spiritual state. She began learning more about natural, plant-based nutrition for herself and survived not only her ovarian cancer but also a near-fatal car crash in 2001 and stage IV lymphoma cancer in 2017. She enjoys growing organic vegetables, medicinal herbs, and native plants in her garden and foraging for the plants in the wild. Sanae and her husband, Eric Lechasseur, currently reside in Santa Monica and North Fork, California, with their dogs and two rescued cats.
