NEW JERSEY — The polls have closed as of 8 p.m. in New Jersey. Now all that remains is the counting to see the results of the Republican primary in the 11th Congressional District. The vote tallies remain unofficial until they are certified later in June as the final official results by the Morris County Clerk's office. Five Republicans are vying to unseat Democrat Mikie Sherrill, who won the seat for the first time in 2018. The Republican candidates are Tayfun Selen, Paul DeGroot, Ruth McAndrew, Alexander R. Halter and Toby Anderson. Sherrill doesn't have a primary challenger. Halter, a producer at SportsNet New York who lives in Denville, has been campaigning under the "America First" slogan and has promoted himself as a "Trump Republican." Halter has previously called out Sherrill, claiming she has failed the people. Selen, who is currently the Commissioner Director for Morris County, cites his experience at the local and county levels to support his fiscal conservatism, claiming that as mayor of Chatham Township, he cut property taxes and voted for the county budget that kept taxes level. DeGroot, who worked for the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office for 25 years and lives in Montville, supports expanding Medicare benefits and opposes "indoctrinating our students with leftist ideology," according to his campaign website. Anderson, who lives in Washington Township, Bergen County, is an Army veteran who wants Congress to protect the free speech rights of all Americans. He also supports resuming border wall construction with Mexico, as well as increasing personnel and resources to combat illegal immigration. McAndrew, a hospice triage nurse with Compassionate Care Hospice of Clifton, promises to fight for expanded Medicare coverage for home health care and to oppose universal pre-kindergarten and vaccine mandates. Patch will update the results as they become available. Results are unofficial. Here were the results as of 9:30 a.m. Wednesday: Paul DeGroot: 12,130Tayfun Selen: 10,838Toby Anderson: 6,071Ruth McAndrew: 1,267Alexander Halter: 419 (90.5 percent of votes counted)
