MORRISTOWN, NJ — A black bear was discovered sleeping in a tree on the Morristown Green late Tuesday night by a pair of locals leaving a business meeting at Fomo, a South Street bar. Police were called to keep an eye on the sleeping bear; no residents were notified, and it is unclear how the bear was removed. Patch received no response to our requests for comment from the police. "I was in the car with my partner for our Latin night when we received a call from Gardner Lonsberry whom we just met with. He said 'hey did you leave town yet?' To which we replied 'no, we're at the light on market street.' he said 'look up. There's a huge bear in the tree on the green," said Greg Keefe, a founder of the destination-marketing organization MorristownNJ.com. "We rushed over to the park and saw the two cops standing there," Keefe said. "The situation was calm. The bear was just hanging out trying to sleep. Police were really mellow." As the weather warms up for the summer, black bears in New Jersey emerge from their winter hibernation in search of food, leading them to wander into commercial and residential areas. The Mendham Township Police Department issued important tips to residents earlier this week about being "bear aware" if you come across one on any of the township's trails or in your own backyard. These include sightings in Summit, Paramus, Middletown, Holmdel and Westfield.
