ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst police believe that the scams targeting two downtown businesses in the last couple of weeks may be connected.
"The Elmhurst Police believe these incidents may be related and are currently under active investigation," city spokeswoman Kassondra Schref said in a statement to Patch on Wednesday.
The targeted businesses were Get Bazzy, 152 N. York St., and Buffalo Wild Wings, 149 N. York St. They are across from each other.
The last incident was shortly before midnight Sunday at the restaurant, police said. A man tried to deceive an employee into giving him money, but the employee refused to comply, according to a report.
A week before, on a Sunday afternoon, a man told a Get Bazzy employee that he was an acquaintance of the business owner and that he needed cash for a tow truck, according to a police report.
The clerk handed the man money from the register, but later learned the man's story was a scam, police said.
In that case, the suspect was described as white, 45 to 50 years old, 5-foot-9, 210 pounds and bald.
In the Buffalo Wild Wings case, police gave a more basic description, saying the man was white and bald.
