The 7th Ward of Lancaster has a long and interesting history. This multi-ethnic section of the city has produced treasured residents who have had a tremendously positive impact not only on the 7th Ward, but on the city, county, state, nation, and around the world. And now residents, past, and present, along with many people of goodwill, are coming together to celebrate the legacy of this community. The 7th Ward has not always enjoyed a good reputation, primarily because it was the home of most minorities who were often the victims of discrimination and who were unfairly judged. This section of the city was often referred to by the disparaging title: “The Ward.” Despite its perception, over the years many residents have overcome formidable barriers to become outstanding, contributing citizens. Now it is time to celebrate! Several community organizations, including the 7th Ward Oral History Project, the African American Cultural Alliance, the Crispus Attucks Community Center, and the Spanish American Civic Association(SACA) have partnered to sponsor an event-filled reunion. Former residents and their families are being encouraged to return to their roots, but current residents and people from everywhere are invited to share in this momentous, multi-ethnic, intergenerational occasion. One of the many heroes of the 7th Ward was the late Leon “Buddy” Glover whose accomplishments have become legendary in this community. His dedication to educational excellence has inspired countless numbers of young people to achieve their life goals. The community is taking the reunion as an opportunity to honor his memory. In addition to the celebration, the bulk of funds raised from the event will go toward a lasting tribute to his life through the funding of the Advantage Lancaster college tours and mentoring program which was Buddy’s passion, and which will be named in his memory.
