Description
Merrell exists to share the simple power of being outside and we are looking to double down on that mission during Great Outdoors Month in Seattle to show that your movie night could take place under the stars, your work from home office could be a picnic table at Myrtle Edwards, or your dining room could be the lawn at Denny Park. Come early and participate in our fun, engaging and educational outdoor expo all day starting at 11am... all for free! Click here for all our amazing June events and RSVP!University of Washington Nature and Health PresentationWe are very excited to partner with University of Washington Nature and Health and for Dr. Pooja S. Tandon to share what they have discovered about the connection between nature and our health. Being outdoors, especially in nature rich spaces, can be beneficial for many aspects of our physical and mental health. This talk focuses on what we know about the relationship between nature contact and health - especially for children. And makes a case for why we all need access to nature in the places where we live, learn, and play. Merrell firmly believes in the powers of being outside and cannot wait to learn more from those studying it. Seating will be available on the open lawn space so bring a blanket and lawn chair, maybe a picnic and cooler and set yourself up for a great time under the open sky. Just show up or RSVP to be entered into an exclusive raffle! About Dr. Pooja S. TandonMy clinical practice as a general pediatrician inspired me to study and promote behaviors, programs and policies that increase physical activity in children, particularly those from disadvantaged communities. Through experiences in an urban academic clinic, a bilingual community health center, and a large private practice, I repeatedly observed that childrens health issues were closely linked to complex factors outside the walls of the exam room. Those aspects of pediatrics that frustrated and moved me the most as a clinician have inspired my research. My experiences led me to further training in public health and research in order to pursue a career that would allow me to intervene on the environmental and social context of health from a young age. As a pediatrician, a scientist, and a mother, I am deeply motivated to effectively translate and disseminate the information I learn from research to advance the health of children on a population level. About UW Nature & HealthNature and Health seeks to understand the connections between nature and human health and well-being. We work to translate that understanding into programs, practices, policies, and the design of healthcare, educational, and community settings that benefit all people and nature. WHO WE ARE Scientists, practitioners, community members on a mission to define how time spent in nature improves health and well-being. WHAT WE DO We promote research, programs, and policies that align with our mission and vision. Through establishing partnerships with both the local Seattle community and across the US, we offer our expertise, guidance, and support to grow the current body of knowledge around this topic and contribute to the design of health-care, educational, and community settings that benefit all people. HOW WE WORK We connect researchers with practitioners, policy makers, and other community members to encourage collaborative efforts that address the needs of our community. We use funds to build pilot projects, establish networks and collaborations, and pursue project specific funding.
