About the bookIn Borders, this graphic adaptation of award-winning author Thomas King's short story, a young Blackfoot boy and his mother end up in a no-man's land between the US and Canadian borders when his mother refuses to answer a seemingly simple question: "Are you American? Or are you Canadian?". In a story told with King's characteristic wit, readers are invited to consider themes of place, nationality, family, and home. About the illustratorNatasha Donovan is an illustrator who focuses on comics and children's book illustrations. She illustrates the award-winning children's book series The Mothers of Xsan, written by Brett Huson. Her recent picture books include A River's Gifts by Patricia Newman and The Global Ocean by Rochelle Strauss. She grew up in Vancouver and currently lives in Bellingham. The Center for Canadian-American Studies at Western Washington University supports critical and interdisciplinary inquiry into the historical construction and modern constitution of Canada and its relationship with the United States. The Center places particular emphasis on the interaction of diverse identities and claims to belonging in northern North America. Together with our partner programs in Canada House, we specialize in teaching about the Salish Sea transboundary region and Francophone Canada, including French language instruction.
