SOMERVILLE, MA — Somerville Theatre is bringing back its annual 70mm and Widescreen Festival, which will kick off on Thursday, June 9.
The festival, which began in 2016, is returning for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. The theatre remained closed from March 2020 until September 2021.
During the closure, Somerville Theatre rebuilt and reopened the Crystal Ballroom on the second floor and updated the theater lobbies and sales areas. The theatre continues to screen movies in the classic main theatre and two modern screening rooms.
Starting with Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo on June 9, the festival will include screenings of Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
Later in the summer, the theatre will show 70mm screenings of Earthquake, Last Action Hero, Streets of Fire, and Joker. The final two films will be Spartacus and Airport.
Several 35mm screenings will take place during the festival as well, including showings of Run Silent Run Deep, U-571, Boogie Nights, Billy Budd, Gladiator, L.A. Confidential, and Mutiny on the Bounty.
