NORTHPORT, NY — Costello and Oreo are the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Cats of the Week. Costello is 5 years old, while Oreo is 2. "I am sure many have read about our Costello before," Lora Wild, a volunteer with the rescue, said. "He is our longest resident." Costello is FIV+. The diagnosis is "totally manageable and absolutely no issue at all," Wild said. FIV is only transmitted between other cats through a deep puncture wound, according to Wild. "For instance between feral tom cats that battle outside or very rarely from a mother cat to her kittens," Wild said. "Clearly this is how Costello must have contacted it because he is the most non-aggressive cat you will ever meet. He befriends any cat he meets." That brings the rescue to Costello's adoration for Oreo, who lived in an apartment complex in Queens. A woman fed Oreo there, but she had to move, according to Wild. "Oreo was so scared she lived behind a wall for 3 months," Wild said. "The kind lady drove back and forth to Queens to leave her food and water, and hoped to lure her out. She reached out to many rescues for help, and finally called NCRA, and we helped trap Oreo and took her in. She was very frightened at first, hissing and mostly leaning into a wall, which understandably is where she felt most comfortable." That changed until she went to the foster home where Costello is staying, Wild said. "He immediately went nose to nose with her and we saw her fear melt away," Wild said. "Since their first encounter, they are by each others side 24/7. They sleep in a kitty bed together, or next to each other all the time. He has taught her to enjoy the sunshine, as they sit in the windows together. He has shown her to trust the humans that are fostering them, allowing them to pet her and hug her and she comes running now for her meals. "In return, Costello now has a girlfriend," Wild continued. "Oreo adores him. Trusts him. Plays with him. All she sees is a gentle soul. She is showing all of us to look past his diagnosis and not to fear it. He is one of the most loving cats this rescue has ever known. We would like to keep this couple together forever. Do you have room for two? They are so deserving of their happily ever after. What a gift they would be to you as you watch their love blossom each day." Costello and Oreo are neutered and spayed respectively, have all their shots, are litter box-trained, and micro-chipped. Oreo is FELV/FIV negative and Costello is FELV negative and FIV positive. If you are interested in meeting Costello and Oreo, you may head to the Northport Cat Rescue website and fill out an application to let them know you would like to meet them or any of the rescue's other wonderful kittens and cats! Or you can call NCRA at 631-606-2631 or email [email protected].
