EAST HAVEN, CT — A white supremacist group is apparently recruiting locally, as its handbills were found on the streets of East Haven. The New England Nationalists Social Club describes itself as a "white nationalist social club, street-oriented fraternity dedicated to raising authentic resistance to the enemies of our people in the New England area." And it does that through, "networking, training, activism, outreach and, above all, ACTION." Its Telegram app account is called, "KlanChowder." "We stand for the security and prosperity of white New Englanders," their promotional pamphlets read. A resident found the recruitment handbills on Silver Sands Street and nearby sidewalks. In them, like-minded men are asked to join. "No matter how you got here, if you are a man of European descent in the New England area that was just to see a better future for your people contact us to get to work," the cards read. The resident was disturbed by what he found. "With everything else going on in this country, you would think people would try to come together as one, but instead, certain groups of people insist on spreading hate and division," the neighbor said, preferring not to be named. "I am terrified what my children's futures are in store for." East Haven Mayor Joseph A. Carfora condemned the group's purpose, and distribution of its leaflets. He added that he's learned that the "white separatist group has reached into other communities in our state, and across New England." "Without hesitation, I condemn this activity," Carfora told Patch. "There is absolutely no place anywhere for any type of exclusionary or divisive practices against any individual or group." Carfora noted that the Anti-Defamation League lists the group as a "neo-Nazi group that 'espouses racism, antisemitism, and intolerance.'" "Regrettably, there seems to be an increasing epidemic of hate along with violent acts in this country, which hurts us all," he said. "East Haven is a diverse community, and we pride ourselves on being welcoming and inclusive." On the alt-right extremist social network GAB, an announcement was shared in February providing details about the group, including the image it uses to promote itself: KlanChowder.
