Description
WOONSOCKET, RI — Partly treated sewage was found running into part of the Blackstone River from a wastewater treatment plant on Sunday.
Now the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said they are aware of the situation and are urging residents to avoid specific parts of the river while the incident remains ongoing.
Residents are asked to avoid swimming, fishing, or boating in the river from Cumberland Hill Road in Woonsocket to the Slater Mill Dam in Pawtucket.
The treatment plant is owned and operated by the private firm Jacobs - which treats about ten million gallons of sewage per day, the department says.
Patch reached out to Jacobs for comment and will update when we hear back.
Residents are urged to avoid those sections of the river until further notice.
No additional information was immediately available.
