Congresswoman Speier loves the diversity of her Congressional District. It makes our community more interesting and better. Of her 750,000 constituents, about one third are part of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. They have suffered disproportionately from racially motivated violence during the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the FBI, hate crimes against members of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities have increased by 77% from 2019 to 2020. Almost 11,000 hate incidents were self-reported to the group Stop AAPI Hate from March 2020 to December 2021.
Congresswoman Speier hopes you will join her for a conversation about discrimination and hate crimes – a conversation that she hopes will bring us together instead of tearing us apart. People of all backgrounds are invited to make the conversation as inclusive as possible.
Joining her will be the founder of Stop AAPI Hate, Dr. Russell Jeung, who is a professor at San Francisco State University’s Asian American Studies Department. The Stop AAPI Hate project tracks Covid-19 related discrimination in order to develop community resources and policy interventions to fight racism. You will also meet Lucas Du, a talented young artist who just won third place in this year’s Congressional Art Competition for his oil painting “End the Violence.”
Let us come together for this important meeting to embrace each other and the diversity that makes San Mateo County such a wonderful place to live.
