PETALUMA, CA — Although the estimated dollar loss from a fire Monday at a private Petaluma Airport hangar could exceed $150,000, some $2 million in assets were protected by responding fire units, the Petaluma Fire Department said. The fire at the Petaluma Municipal Airport, 601 Sky Ranch Drive, was reported at 11:52 a.m. Monday. An off-duty Petaluma Fire battalion chief was driving through the area and was first to arrive at the scene to find the contents of a hangar, including a small airplane and a classic Corvette, involved in fire, an official with the Petaluma Fire Department said. A small plane and a classic Corvette burned after a fire and explosion in the hangar housing them at the Petaluma Municipal Airport in Petaluma, California, on June 6, 2022. (Petaluma Fire Chief Jeff Schach via Bay City News) "Shortly after, the on-duty battalion chief and two fire engines arrived to quickly contain the fire to the hangar of origin and to ensure all occupants had exited the building," Battalion Chief Kevin Weaver said. Until the fire was completely controlled, additional fire engine crews protected neighboring hangars as well as two motorhomes that were parked to the rear of the hangar, Weaver said. No injuries were reported by bystanders or firefighters. "Although the estimated dollar loss of the fire could exceed $150K there was an estimated $2M in valued assets protected by the responding fire units," Weaver said. The Petaluma Fire Prevention Bureau was continuing its investigation to determine the cause of the fire. "The Petaluma Fire Department wishes to thank our surrounding partners for their assistance at the incident and for providing station coverage to ensure the city was protected," Weaver said.
