NEW JERSEY — This article was updated as of 10:32 p.m. Voting polls have closed as of 8 p.m. in New Jersey, and votes are being tallied for the 2022 Primary Election. The results for New Jersey's 8th Congressional District are starting to come in. The vote tallies remain unofficial until they are certified later by the Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Union County clerk offices. Several towns throughout Essex, Hudson and Union counties fall within the 8th Congressional District. Currently represented by Democratic Congressman Albio Sires, the district encompasses Fairview, Belleville, part of Newark, part of Bayonne, East Newark, Guttenberg, Harrison, Hoboken, part of Jersey City, part of Kearny, North Bergen, Union City, Weehawken, West New York and Elizabeth. Rep. Sires is running to become mayor of West New York in 2023, according to New Jersey Globe,so he will not be on this year's ballot for the District 8 election. He has served the district since 2006. Sires endorsed Robert Menendez Jr., the son of New Jersey's senior U.S. Senator — Bob Menendez. Menendez Jr. is running on the Democratic ticket this year. Four total candidates are competing in this year's primary, including one Republican and three Democrats. Marcos Arroyo will win the Republican ticket, as he is running unopposed.
