Description

On Saturday, June 25th at 4 PM CT, join us for a Community Health Forum at H.O.P.E. Center for a timely and urgent discussion of the impacts of toxic coal ash pollution from NIPSCO’s Michigan City coal plant on our health and well-being and how we can come together as a community to take action for environmental justice. Just Transition Northwest Indiana, the LaPorte County NAACP, and the NWI Ministers’ Conference will host this event, featuring a panel discussion and community dialogue. This event is free and open to the public & families. Food and refreshments will be provided. Please register in advance to secure your attendance. Background on the issue: Northwest Indiana's utility, NIPSCO, is leaving millions of tons of coal ash in place at the Michigan City coal plant, leaking contaminants into Lake Michigan and Trail Creek. Coal ash is the toxic waste left over from burning coal, containing arsenic, lead, mercury, and other dangerous toxins harmful to human health, wildlife, and the environment. Although NIPSCO's five on-site coal ash pits are currently being removed, there is no plan to address the 2 million tons of toxic coal ash buried along the lakeshore as the plant prepares to shut down between 2026 and 2028. Safe, complete removal and cleanup of the coal ash would create long-term benefits and help bring about a Just Transition for impacted communities, our families, and workers in Michigan City and the larger region.
