Potential 'Threat' Prompts Increased Security At Calabasas School

CALABASAS, CA — Authorities on Tuesday responded to a potential threat to Alice C. Stelle Middle School in Calabasas, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Lost Hills Station. Authorities conducted a "school threat assessment" at AC Stelle Middle School and determined there was no credible threat, according to the Lost Hills Station. Even still, the station increased patrols at AC Stelle on Wednesday, authorities said. AC Stelle students on Wednesday have an early dismissal at 11:50 a.m. and an on-campus culmination ceremony for eighth graders at 6:30 p.m. Two students were overheard having a conversation that was perceived to be threatening, according to the Lost Hills Station. The conversation was reported to the around 3:3o p.m., authorities said. There was no additional information available on the nature of the threat. The Lost Hills Sheriff's Station did not believe the middle school was placed on lockdown or a shelter in place order Tuesday, authorities said. AC Stelle Middle School is located at 22450 Mulholland Hwy. The potential threat comes amid heightened fear of gun violence on school campuses across the United States. On May 24, 19 students and two teachers were killed in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Since the deadly shooting, many Southern California schools have responded to potential threats, including schools in Menifee and Santa Ana. Firearm-related injuries became the leading cause of death for children age 19 and under in 2020, according to The New England Journal of Medicine. 2020 was the first year gun violence surpassed motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of death in this age group.
