LONG ISLAND, NY — During a period of increased enforcement over the Memorial Day weekend, New York State Police issued hundreds of tickets and arrested nearly two dozen drunken drivers on Long Island.
State police ran the stepped-up enforcement program from the evening of May 27 through the early morning of May 31. During those few days, officers rolled out sobriety checkpoints and DWI patrols, and also increased ticketing of distracted drivers.
Statewide, police issued 13,688 tickets and arrested 213 people for driving while intoxicated.
On Long Island, police issued 851 tickets, which included 151 speeding violations and 108 seat belt and child restraint violations.
In addition, state police arrested 21 people and charged them with DWI on Long Island.
