Eyes on Seagrass is a volunteer seagrass monitoring program created by UF/IFAS Sea Grant Charlotte County in response to disappearing seagrass and increased macroalgae growth in Upper Charlotte Harbor and Lemon Bay. The summer 2022 sampling window occur from July 11-25. Participants be required to form teams of at least three and receive training ahead of their first-time sampling. Sea Grant will provide monitoring equipment, a dive flag, and a cooler for samples. Teams will be responsible for transportation to their assigned sites (via boat, kayak, canoe, or paddleboard) as well as their own water shoes, mask, snorkel, and fins.
Volunteers will have two options to receive training if they have not already:
1. Attend a 2-hour in person training at Mid-County Regional Library on July 7th.
2. Arrive at the Eyes on Seagrass Volunteer Survey by 9AM. Boats will be encouraged to launch no later than 10:30. The intention of this event is to connect volunteers who may have not already established a team and provide training. Snacks will be provided.
Both summer trainings are supported by the Coastal & Heartland National Estuarine Partnership (CHNEP).
