NEWARK, NJ — The following news release comes courtesy of the Newark Center for Meditative Culture. Learn more about posting announcements or events to your local Patch site. June 1 marked the date that the Newark Center for Meditative Culture (NCMC) celebrated five years of serving the greater Newark area with its inclusive community of meditative practice and study. NCMC offers diverse programs including bilingual Spanish and English meditation classes, healing workshops, mindful movement sessions, and much more. NCMC has supported and continues to support the local Newark community by educating them about mindfulness and meditation practices and, about the benefits of these activities. NCMC is a volunteer-run organization and is strongly committed to openness and inclusion. To honor its fifth anniversary, NCMC will host several programs including its first-ever residential retreat for BIPOC titled Between Heaven and Earth from June 17 through June 19 at the Pumpkin Hollow Retreat Center in Craryville, NY. Leading mindfulness experts including Kazi, Spiritual Director of NCMC, Veronica Guevara-Lovgren of Tres Ositos Yoga, Leslie of I'm So Yoga Newark, Kamilah Crawley of The Mindful Woman, and Travis Spencer of Institute of African American Mindfulness among others will present workshops on mindfulness, yoga, reiki, and other practices. The program will feature ecology talks, sitting practice (meditation, chanting), moving practice (yoga, qigong), drum circles, creative sessions, trail walking, and forest bathing. The setting of the retreat is a retired farm where attendees will get to experience a waterfall, nature trails, a labyrinth, a peace prayer pole, and an organic garden. The focus of the retreat is to gather BIPOC community members to help them cultivate their meditative practice and to allow them to experience the sustaining, healing, and awakening benefits of a rural environment. Other activities that will mark NCMC's fifth anniversary are a new partnership with Newark Downtown District (NDD) to host a monthly practice session at the NDD Downtown Market beginning June 2, an Open House event for local residents in July, and other programs. More details for these events will be released as they become available. Between Heaven and Earth will take place from June 17 - June 19 at the Pumpkin Hollow Retreat Center located in Craryville, NY and is open to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous or other People of Color) adults (18-years-old and older) who live or work in the greater Newark area and is also open to non-local attendees. The fee for lodging attendees is $300 per person and includes room, meals, and retreat activities. The fee for campsite attendees is $220 per person and includes access to camping ground, meals, and retreat activities. Campsite attendees must supply their own camping gear. Scholarships are available for those who cannot afford the fee; a request to be considered for a scholarship can be made when registering online. Transportation will be available for a $20 non-refundable fee per person. A Covid-19 vaccination card or proof of a current negative Covid-19 test within three days of the event is required to enter the retreat. Masks will not be required during the event.
