BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Tuesday is Election Day in New Jersey for primary races, and Bergen County voters have choices to make at the local, county, and federal levels. Republican candidates are looking to gain ground at the county level, in the executive's office and on the Board of County Commissioners, where Democrats hold sway. Some Bergen County municipalities don't have many local races on the ballot, but all have candidates for county committee. The communities Patch covers most closely in Bergen County are listed at the bottom of this article. Federal level Representative Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat, faces no challengers from his own party in his push to win re-election for a third time. Gottheimer represents NJ's 5th Congressional district, and has since he was elected in 2016. The district covers much of Bergen County and parts of Passaic, Sussex, and Warren counties. Sab Skenderi of Wyckoff, Nick De Gregorio of Fair Lawn, Frank T. Pallotta of Mahwah, Fred Schneiderman of Cresskill, and Richard J. Franolich of Oakland have filed as Republicans to run against him. Representative Bill Pascrell Jr. is the incumbent Democrat in NJ's 9th Congressional District. Pascrell represents south and east Bergen County, as well as parts of Passaic County. Republican William "Billy" Prempeh Jr. has no challengers within his party. He ran against Pascrell in 2020. Prempeh, an Air Force veteran, lives in Paterson. Pascrell has been the NJ-9 representative since 2013, and represented the 8th district from 1997-2013 before district boundaries were redrawn based on 2010 Census data. Countywide Two challengers are looking to unseat Bergen County Executive James Tedesco III. Republicans Todd Calguire of Midland Park and Linda T. Barba of Fort Lee have filed to run against Tedesco, a Democrat. They will duke it out Tuesday night to see who will face Tedesco in November. Tedesco, who lives in Paramus, is in his second four-year term as executive. Six Republicans have also submitted paperwork to take one of the Board of County Commissioners seats currently occupied by a Democrat. On the board of commissioners, three seats are open. Three Democratic incumbents, Thomas J. Sullivan of Montvale, Germaine M. Ortiz of Emerson, and Mary Amoroso of Mahwah, are running. The six Republicans on the ballot are Douglas Holden of Saddle River, Ronald Joseph Lin of Franklin Lakes, Dierdre G. Paul of Englewood, Paul A. Duggan of Bogota, Angelique R. Hakim of Dumont, and Mary J. Guinchard of Ridgewood.
