Nassau Coronavirus Cases By Community: Virus Rages In December

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — The second wave of the coronavirus continues to hit Nassau County hard, with more than a quarter of the county's total confirmed cases happening in December. The county has started to see more than 1,000 new positive cases a day as deaths continue to climb. Since the first case of the coronavirus was recorded in the county in March, Nassau has had 84,054 confirmed cases. Of those, 22,882 — or 27 percent — are from this month alone. The county has also seen 106 new deaths this month from the virus, and 2,366 deaths in all. According to Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, there are 598 Nassau residents in the hospital with the virus, with 69 of them being in the ICU and 44 on ventilators. "Long Island is slated to receive another 126,600 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine this week and we continue to work closely with the state and Northwell on the distribution plan," Curran said in a statement on Monday. "But in the past few weeks we have seen upticks in our positivity and hospitalizations – reminding us that it is not the time to let our guards down. Please continue to celebrate smart this holiday season so we can avoid shutdowns and curb the spread of this virus." Thousands of healthcare workers on Long Island have already received inoculations against the coronavirus. Vaccines have also begun to be distributed to nursing home staff and residents. There are now 18 Nassau County communities that have recorded more than 1,000 cases of the virus. Of those, seven have more than 2,000 confirmed cases. Hempstead, the hardest-hit community in the county, has confirmed 3,528 cases of the coronavirus.
