COVENTRY, RI — A Coventry man was arrested Tuesday after Rhode Island State Police said he injured a state trooper in a drunken crash.
Christopher Warrener, 36, was charged with driving under the influence first offense with a blood alcohol of 0.15 or greater and driving to endanger resulting in physical injury.
Just after 1 a.m., troopers from the Wickford and Lincoln Woods barracks were called to a crash on Interstate 95 southbound at Route 37 in Warwick.
The crash closed three lanes of traffic, forcing drivers into the high speed lane. A State Police cruiser had its emergency lights on and blocked the third lane, but Warrener didn't leave the lane and rear-ended the trooper, according to police.
State Police said Warrener did not suffer any injuries in the crash and displayed "obvious signs" of intoxication when questioned by police.
The trooper was taken to Rhode Island Hospital by a Warwick ambulance with minor injuries.
