Job Description for 2022 - Waste Busters, Inc. application is found at: Job Title: Zero Waste Facilitator - Sorter Classifications: Part-Time Compensation: $20/hr-$25hr, 401k program Health Benefits: none Hours: Normally 10-20 hours/week Schedule: Nights 9pm-12am, or as needed/determined for new clients Office Location: Richmond, CA Offsite Work Location: Various Locations throughout San Francisco, CA Licenses/Certificates Required: CA Driver’s license Reports to: Zero Waste Facilitator Supervisor _______________ Program Description: Waste Busters, Inc. is offering a new waste management service to help ‘green’ large generators of waste ensure that it is being properly sorted and managed. Our team provides waste sorting services to decontaminate dumpsters where users did not properly sort, to reduce the environmental impacts of landfills. Beyond sorting for maximum recycling and compost diversion from landfill, the Zero Waste Facilitator team will document ongoing issues, materials quantities, levels of contamination and other notes and/or photos to track progress and provide feedback to client and users. This program supports a variety of client types, but the work will generally be performed in the loading docks, trash rooms, or trash enclosures of large buildings in San Francisco. Teams may have one or multiple buildings to visit during each shift. Job Summary: The Zero Waste Facilitator team will be responsible for the operation of the Zero Waste Facilitator service including: arriving on-time and clocking in onsite, photographing and documenting the trash, recycling, and compost dumpsters and evaluating contamination levels. Upon discovery of contamination, unacceptable materials, or unsorted bins, the team will address the situation, removing misplaced materials and ensuring all bins are free from contamination. Finally the team will leave the area clean and document the final situation and end-time for the shift. This role involves transferring material from carts or dumpsters, requiring lifting and bending activity. Sturdy clothes and shoes are required, any other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves will be provided. Litter pickup, sweeping, and sorting material including trash, recyclables, food waste and other compost are the main focus of the position, followed by data collection including taking photos, measuring volume of material types and contamination levels, tracking generation patterns of waste streams, sources of contamination, and other observational note taking. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Program Implementation (constant – more than 66% of time): Removing materials from dumpsters, opening and sorting bags of discards into appropriate waste streams. Dumping bins and bags into dumpsters. Occasionally entering dumpsters as needed. Use of smartphone to enter photos and data into an app based database. Quality Control (constant – more than 66% of time): Ensuring the compost and recycling streams are clean and free of contamination, hand sorting of waste materials, doing periodic waste audits and ensuring appropriate destination of materials. Prioritizing safety and alerting supervisor/management of unsafe situations or practices. Ensuring completeness and quality of data in nightly reports is essential. Education and Outreach (frequent – under 33% of time): Attend and review workshops and training materials from Waste Busters to master knowledge of recycling and composting systems, administer and develop educational presentations for clients and their tenants. Development, Education, and Training (frequent –34-66% of time): Enforce safety rules and regulations; learn best practices; participate in safety trainings and other training; administer trainings developed with Waste Busters; act as a courteous professional and demonstrate appropriate work ethics, behavior, and skills, both internally and externally. Typical Working Conditions Generally the environment is that of a building loading dock, indoors. Typical working conditions include but are not limited to strenuous and frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; frequent twisting, turning, and reaching; frequently working after hours. Equipment Used This position requires use of safety equipment including gloves, eye protection, safety vests, and work boots. The program often employs trash bins and rolling carts that can weigh upwards of 100 pounds when full. Minimum Education and Experience Required. High school diploma or GED. Basic knowledge of Zero Waste, recycling, and/or resource conservation. Demonstrated interest in waste management, recycling, conservation, or other environmental sustainability related field. Demonstrated ability to give direction regarding safety and to implement safety procedures. Minimum Skills Required Positive communication, including conflict management and resolution skills. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Written and verbal communication skills, English and Spanish is a plus. Flexibility to work weekends and accommodate a night time schedule. Basic computer/software use: The online website portal and mobile phone app, Humanity, is our primary mode of communicating job assignments, clocking in and out, requesting shifts, and other work related tasks. A smartphone is essential, for time tracking and on-site data entry including job site pictures, database entries and regular reporting of work outcomes.
