Description

School Participatory Budgeting (SPB) is an innovative civic learning tool designed to build student agency, collaboration, and critical thinking skills while creating pathways and opportunities for students to contribute to their communities and civic life. Arizona has been at the forefront of the model since 2013 when Bioscience High School in Phoenix Union High School District (PXU) launched the first SPB process in the United States as a pilot project. By 2016, in partnership with the Participatory Budgeting Project (PBP), Center for the Future of Arizona (CFA), and Arizona State University Participatory Governance Initiative (PGI), PXU adopted the first school district-wide SPB model in the United States, beginning with five schools and 3,500 students and expanding the process incrementally to all twenty PXU schools by 2019. Currently, SPB in Arizona involves 48 schools across six school districts, engaging upwards of 63,000 students annually. Join CFA, PGI, and our partners for a networking breakfast where participants will reflect on nearly ten years of SPB implementation and research in Arizona and explore new ideas for continued growth and expansion of the model in the years ahead.
