Press release from the City of Marion: June 4, 2022 Intersection Improvements & Reconstruction Projects to Begin Next Week| Crews are expected to begin working on three important road improvement projects next week. Request for Proposals Issued to Evaluate Solid Waste Collections Today, June 3, the City of Marion issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to qualified firms for services related to the review of the current solid waste collection system. The selected firm will be responsible for conducting a multi-phased project to review the current systems, perform a cost of service study, evaluate future solid waste collections and management systems, and assist with overall programmatic decisions that lead to a sustainable and modern system in the future. It is anticipated that a firm will be selected by July 2022 to begin preliminary assessment of the current solid waste collections program. A copy of the RFP can be found at www.cityofmarion.org/publicnotice. City Arborist achieves Tree Risk Assessment Recertification City Arborist Mike Cimprich received word earlier this week that he successfully completed the recertification process for the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification® credential from the International Society of Arboriculture. This is critical training for an arborist especially in an urban setting to keep our crews safe before performing work on damaged trees as well as those who live, work and recreate near the trees in our City. Kudos to members of Marion's Special Response Team Last week one of Marion's K9 officers, Kain, was injured in an accident following a training exercise of the Special Response Team. Thanks to the swift response by a number of our police officers and firefighters on the scene, Kain still has a chance to recover. Kudos to Officers Hartman and Herrig as well as Firefighters Madland and Rowe for their quick, calm and professional actions. The four-legged members of our force are just as much part of Team Marion. Thanks to all for your dedication and care. Come Work with Team Marion The City of Marion has a wide variety of job opportunities available. We are a highly collaborative team where people can learn and grow while making a positive impact in the community. We offer competitive pay, health and dental insurance, retirement plan, tuition reimbursement, vacation, sick and holiday pay, and more. For a complete list of current openings, visit www.cityofmarion.org/employment. New Faces in New Places Congratulations to James Offerman on being promoted to equipment operator within the Parks and Recreation Department earlier this week. James started with the City in January 2009 as a member of the Public Services Department and transferred to Parks and Rec in January 2022. Congrats, James! We are excited to introduce a new feature of this newsletter in response to some of the questions our City Council members are hearing during their office hours at Taube Park. It's shaping up to be another exciting weekend of community events in Marion with the return of St. Joseph Fun Days today through Sunday and the Kiwanis BBQ Rendezvous on Saturday. Special thanks to the members of our team who support these events behind the scenes. From processing the necessary licenses to conducting the appropriate inspections to providing on-site security, thank you for the important part you play in building community! \ Pop-Up Acts in the Artway Return to Uptown Marion this Summer The City of Marion will host Pop-Up Acts in the Uptown Artway this summer on a series of Friday evenings. Enjoy free live music from the Uptown Artway or the patio of a nearby business from 6-8 p.m. Ace Jones will kick things off tonight. The event series features a variety of local acts. Performers interested in being considered for future dates are encouraged to send an email to [email protected]. Clean Creek Festival Planned for June 11 at Thomas Park In order to promote the well-being of our watershed, Green Iowa AmeriCorps and Iowa Rivers Revival are hosting a creek clean-up and environmental education event at Thomas Park on June 11. The first half of the event will consist of a creek clean-up with volunteers removing waste and debris by boat and by foot on and along paths of Indian Creek. The second half of the event will have participants interacting with nonprofits and organizations that protect and conserve our watersheds, water quality and aquatic ecosystems. Learn more or register today. Here's a look at the tentative agenda containing a list of several items that will be coming before the City Council in the weeks ahead.
