ELMHURST, IL – Most of the commentary from a group that represents residents just north of Elmhurst appears to defend the possible sale of nearly half of White Pines Golf Club.
All along, though, the White Pines Community Alliance maintains it is neutral on the matter.
"There have been comments that we as a group are biased towards selling the golf course," the alliance said in a statement Friday. "As we said before, our group is mixed on their opinions of a potential sale."
The group's members agree that a decision should benefit all the more than 20,000 residents of the Bensenville Park District, which includes unincorporated neighborhoods just north of Elmhurst, the statement said.
"It should not just benefit a few homeowners that live near the course," the alliance said.
The group argued that the tenants of more than 300 apartments south of the golf club lack the money to play expensive rounds of golf and buy related equipment.
In its statement, the alliance backed growing calls for a referendum on a sale. Also endorsing such a move are Bensenville Village President Frank DeSimone and state Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Addison.
The park district has made no decisions on a sale. The club consists of two 18-hole golf courses.
The White Pines Civic Association, which shares the same acronym with the alliance, opposes selling the golf club.
Opponents contend a sale could result in light industrial development that would worsen traffic, noise and flooding.
The park district says a sale could generate up to $150 million, providing money to upgrade other park facilities.
