DUBLIN, CA — Tuesday is Election Day for the California primary when voters will decide key races in the Tri-Valley and at the state and federal levels. Arguably one of the biggest races in Alameda County is for sheriff/coroner. Sheriff Gregory Ahern has two challengers - Yesenia Sanchez, Alameda County Sheriff Commander, and Joann Walker, a police officer and educator. District Attorney Nancy O'Malley is not running again, leaving her seat open on the ballot. There are four candidates for the DA position. Pamela Price, civil rights attorney Seth Steward, chief of staff to Oakland City Council's Dan Kalb Terry Wiley, chief deputy district attorney Jimmie Wilson, trial lawyer County Superintendent of Schools L.K. Monroe battles to save her spot against Alysse Castro. Trustee Yvonee Cerrato is not running again for Alameda County Board of Education Trustee Area 7 leaving the spot open for three hopefuls. Cheryl Cook-Kallio, a retired teacher Kate Dao, educator, parent, businesswoman Eric Dillie, public school teacher Joseph Rubay is again challenging Rebecca Bauer-Kahan for the 16th State Assembly District seat. Bauer-Kahan has represented the Tri-Valley district since 2018. Rubay has challenged her multiple times. In local races such as sheriff, trustee area, DA and superintendent of county schools, candidates need a 50 percent plus 1 majority to win. This means local races could see winners on Election Day. If no candidate gets 50 percent plus 1, the top two have a runoff in November. In federal and state races, the top two candidates go on to the November election. Along with local candidates, the election includes candidates for: U.S Senate Governor Lieutenant Governor Secretary of State Controller Treasurer Attorney General Insurance Commissioner Member of State Board of Equalization State Superintendent of Public Instruction U.S Representative in Congress State Senator State Assembly Member Polls close at 8 p.m. on Election Day. Voters can track their ballots here. For a complete guide to statewide races, see the CalMatters California Election 2022 Voter Guide.
