BEVERLY, MA — The public is invited to learn more about the investigation into environmental contamination and mediation efforts at the former Varian site this week. The presentation and discussion will be held at the Shore Country Day School at 545 Cabot Street Thursday night at 7. The doors will open at 6:30 with posters available on the investigation results and with a chance to talk with project staff. The presentation will begin at 7 with time to answer more questions following that. Remote attendance is available via Microsoft Teams here. The site at 150 Sohier Road has been the focus of concern that toxic chemicals dumped more than a half-century ago were causing carcinogens to seep into the soil in the surrounding area. The company has long been involved with a "cleanup" process in the area, but the state Department of Environmental Protection has criticized the cleanup and ordered the company to develop a new plan with fines in place for non-compliance.
