COVID Cases Rise Above 500 In Westfield For Month Of May

WESTFIELD, NJ — New Jersey's Department of Health is reporting high levels of COVID activity in regions across the state, and Westfield is no exception. According to a recent update from Mayor Shelley Brindle, Westfield's COVID case count is up from 294 cases in April to 509 reported in May. The pediatric cases can be broken down as follows: Under age 5: 32 casesAges 5-9: 40 casesAges 10-14: 58 casesAges 15-19: 24 casesIn addition, 66 residents age 65 and older tested positive in May. As of Friday, the Department of Health reports that the state's average for daily confirmed cases is down 19 percent from a week ago but still up from 36 percent from a month ago. The rate of transmission is currently .96 as this most recent wave appears to have peaked, Brindle wrote. Union County had an average of 226 daily cases reported during the past two weeks, which is up from 173 a month ago. Statewide, New Jersey had 928 hospitalizations reported as of June 2, which is the highest number in three months. Overlook Medical Center reported 26 hospitalized patients with COVID for the week of May 26. This is up from 13 hospitalizations reported a month ago. For the month of May, there were 509 COVID cases reported in Westfield (up from 294 in April). Daily immunizations averaged 7.9K a day statewide, which is down from 12.2K a day four weeks ago. Currently, 80.8 percent of all New Jersey residents ages five and older are fully vaccinated. The Westfield Health Department is now pre-ordering vaccines for those under five, as they anticipate being able to start immunizing this age group by the end of June. They have also distributed home test kits to all child care centers, according to Brindle.
