Description

This program sponsored by The Renaissance Society of Sac State is open to the community! Meet on the Sac State Campus, in Del Norte Hall, Room 1004. The program is free, but a small campus parking fee may apply. Details can be found here: https://www.csus.edu/college/social-sciences-interdisciplinary-studies/renaissance-society/seminars.html#our-free-summer-program When the First World War thrust the United States into total war, the Sacramento Valley was quick to mobilize. Many of America's first military air units were trained at Mather Field, while local farms filled massive food supply orders for the Allies. Many women eschewed tradition and joined the industrial workforce at Liberty Iron Works, Southern Pacific Railroad and more. Though many banded together, the region's home front was not without tension. Gripped by xenophobia, groups like the Liberty League formed local chapters to hunt spies, and local police forced displays of patriotism from suspected German sympathizers. With exclusive content from the Sacramento Public Library's Special Collections, archivist and historian James Scott reveals the struggles and triumphs of the Sacramento region during the First World War. James C. Scott is the Reference Librarian and Archivist at the Sacramento Public Library – and the Manager of the Special Collections of the Sacramento Public Library. He is the creator of the Valley to Vietnam documentary series - "WWI Revisited" - Sacramento Room Digital. He is the Co-author of World War II and the Sacramento Valley (History Press, 2018), World War I and the Sacramento Valley: Great War in the Great Valley (History Press, 2016), author of Sacramento's Gold Rush Saloons (History Press, 2014), Co-Author of Sacramento's Alkali Flat (Arcadia, 2009) and Mather Field (Arcadia, 2011). He served as an American Library Association consulting librarian for Ken Burn's "Vietnam War." Immediately following the presentation, folks will meet in the lower level of the Library near the Book Bin to participate in a brown bag lunch in a shady spot on campus. You are invited to join the campus tour after lunch where we will explore one of the campus Hidden Gems: The Sokiku Nakatani Tea Room and Garden. Meet outside the University Library. No registration is required. Another option is a Book Bin event at 12:30, no registration required. Interested in learning more about The Renaissance Society?
