MORRISTOWN, NJ — The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced last week that 32 Local Bridges Fund grants totaling $47.3 million were awarded to counties across the Garden State to assist counties in keeping local bridges in good repair.
NJDOT will provide Morristown with a $1 million grant for the fiscal year 2022. The grant funds will be used to replace the Ridgedale Avenue Bridge across the Whippany River.
"The state of good repair of New Jersey's transportation infrastructure is a priority of the Murphy Administration. The Local Bridges Fund grant program offers our local governments the ability to use grant funds to invest in bridge projects in their communities," NJDOT Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti said. "This grant program, along with others, continues to demonstrate NJDOT's commitment to communities throughout New Jersey."
The program provides funding for county bridge improvements in each of New Jersey's 21 counties. The grants are intended to repair, reconstruct, and replace bridges with the most severe structural flaws. The Transportation Trust Fund will pay for the $47.3 million bridge project.
Morristown was the only town in Morris County to receive funding through this program.

The NJDOT Division of Local Aid and Economic Development administers the grants, which are evaluated by the Department's Bureau of Structural Engineering.
Local Aid grants account for a substantial portion of the Department of Transportation's Local System Support, which also includes municipal aid, local lead projects, regional planning and project development along with transportation alternatives projects.
