Elderly RI Hiker Assisted Off New Hampshire's Kilkenny Ridge Trail

CONCORD, NH — An avid hiker from Rhode Island was injured on the Kilkenny Ridge Trail in New Hampshire on Saturday. New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers received a 911 call about an injured hiker who had descended off Mount Cabot and was north of the trail when they suffered an unknown leg injury. The officers as well as volunteers from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue responded to the area and found John Driscoll, 65, of East Providence, RI. He had been hiking with another person from the Unknown Pond Trailhead off Mill Brook Road in Stark when the injury occurred. Driscoll continued hiking but about five miles later, stopped. He was assisted by other hikers while waiting for rescuers, Lt. Mark Ober of Fish and Game said. Conservation officers attempted to use ARVs to get to Driscoll but about were unable to access the junction of the Kilkenny Ridge Trail and Bunnell Notch Trail. "From there," Ober said, "they hiked in an additional mile until meeting Driscoll and the Good Samaritan hikers who were assisting him. After "a slow, but steady hike out," the rescue team along with Driscoll reached the ATV at 8:30 p.m., he said. From there Driscoll was driven down the trail more than two miles to awaiting vehicles. He was taken to Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster for evaluation and treatment of his injury. Driscoll, an avid hiker, Ober said, did have a Hike Safe card. Got a news tip?
