Dr. Karcheik Sims-Alvarado, the Historian in Heels, leads a two-part Juneteenth Lecture Series at the Atlanta University Center. Lecture 1: The History of Juneteenth. What was happening at the time of the Emancipation Proclamation, including the founding of Historically Black Colleges & Universities Lecture 2: Atlanta for Freedom. What role did Atlanta play at the end of slavery? A look at the events, entrepreneurs and energy that fueled the "city that influences everything." Dr. Sims-Alvarado is the CEO and founder of Preserve Black Atlanta, dedicated to preserving African-American and history and culture. She is an assistant professor and director of the Public History and Cultural Heritage Preservation Program at Morehouse College. Each lecture is approximately 45 minutes with a break.
