Northport Council To Vote Monday On Adoption Of Juneteenth Holiday

NORTHPORT, AL — The City of Northport Monday evening will consider becoming the latest Alabama city to formally recognize Juneteenth as a holiday. Typically celebrated on June 19 as a way to commemorate the formal ending of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth finally became a federal holiday in 2021. If approved during Monday night's regular City Council meeting, Northport will join the City of Tuscaloosa in acknowledging the holiday, as Tuscaloosa has already set aside June 20 for its observances. Tuscaloosa County, as of the publication of this story, has not formally adopted a resolution acknowledging the federal holiday.
