Hygieia Biological Laboratories is engaged in the research, development and manufacturing of vaccines and related products for human and animal health. We offer a competitive salary and the opportunity to be part of a growing company. The Senior Animal Care Technician is responsible for providing care for various poultry in a research environment. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, thorough cleaning of animal enclosures and work areas; distributing animal diets and water; vaccinating poultry; completing facility compliance paperwork; tracking animal and supply inventories; performing minor equipment repair; and ongoing monitoring of the health of poultry in our care. Qualifications • Bachelor of Science graduate or equivalent • Experience working with poultry desired • Experience in animal handling • Experience in completing compliance paperwork • Experience in tracking inventories • A valid CA driver’s license • May not own or be around other avian species Responsibilities • Perform routine, daily animal husbandry (diet prep, feeding, water, cleaning) for poultry (primarily chickens and turkeys) • Ensure that the general upkeep of all animal work spaces are maintained, including but not limited to, cleaning animal cages, cleaning food and water containers, laundry, sweeping and mopping work space floors. • Observe and document animal health concerns and report to appropriate staff • Assist scientists with vaccinations, taking blood samples, bird weights, and collecting other data to support projects • Track poultry population inventories and plan upcoming test schedules • Track facility supply inventories and order supplies when needed • Maintain and perform minor repairs for facility and its equipment • Addressing facilities needs through emergency situations • Finalizing all compliance paperwork in relation to facility and tests performed • Assists with other laboratory duties as needed • Supervising other animal care technicians depending on experience Working Conditions • Work is performed in an indoor animal facility with exposure to seasonal outdoor conditions • Must have reliable transportation • Must be comfortable working with animals – specifically poultry • Hours are 40 hours per week and flexible. Early mornings are preferred (starting between 6:00 and 8:00 AM) • Weekend work required; must be available to work at least one weekend morning and holidays as needed • Animal waste contact, smells and visual exposure are prevalent • Occasional lifting up to 75 lbs. with reasonable accommodation • Frequent walking, bending and stooping in animal areas Please e-mail your resume with cover letter to [email protected].
