Montpelier VT

Description

Rilo, the very sweet and lovable American Foxhound mix, needs a new home! She is four years old, around 50 pounds, and is spayed and current on all vaccinations. We brought her up to Vermont from rural South Carolina where she had been in a shelter for many months. Rilo is really wonderful, personable and smart but she needs a very specific environment to be happy and, unfortunately, we can't provide that. First and foremost, she cannot live with cats. She has a very strong prey drive and the shelter in South Carolina informed us that she has killed a cat in a previous home. However, she isn't aggressive or mean at all with humans of any age or size. Never once has she bitten or even growled in our house or out on walks, she just can't resist the urge to chase and hunt down cats. She probably would do the same to any small animal inside or outside your home such as chickens, rabbits, etc. She would do great in a home with another dog her size or larger. She loves to play with other dogs, but can be a bit rambunctious and needs another dog who can take that. Second, she is a runner and *needs* a fenced in yard or a family who is committed to walking her on leash every time. She is quite the Houdini and can't be left on a line or run. She knows how to slip out of any collar or harness that we've put her in and her instinct to follow scents is stronger than her recall. She's a hound, it's what she does. Third, she is a real cuddly and sweet lady and she loves nothing more than to sit on the couch with you and lay her head on your lap. She's very quiet and relaxed indoors and is completely house-trained and non-destructive. Great with kids, doesn't mind being handled, given shots, and brought in the car places. She has no food aggression or toy aggression. She knows sit and lay down and is very food motivated so she is very eager to learn new things for treats. If you have the right home for Rilo, please get in touch. Again, your home must have *no small animals* and have a fenced in yard or a leash-only policy. She has demonstrated that she will run far and has no road sense at all. We are asking a re-homing fee of $50 and plan on bringing her to your house so we can make sure it's the right place for her. We are willing to travel anywhere an hour or less from Montpelier (sorry Brattleboro!).
