Objectives of the Conference:
Bring together representatives from U.S. Tribes, States, and Federal Agencies, NGO’s and interested citizens to gain a better understanding of transboundary mining projects and proposals and the historic and current impacts to downstream waters. The conference will also include participation from First Nations and provincial organizations and government.Provide the most current and relevant data and case studies related to the current and future impacts of transboundary mining projects in British Columbia, Canada to the downstream transboundary waters.Identify key legal and policy strategies for US Tribes that could successfully address the transboundary impacts and threats to shared US waters.Work with U.S. Tribes from Washington, Alaska, Idaho and Montana as well as other regional experts to share diverse and scientifically sound information that could lead to a cooperative and meaningful approach to address the issues impacting US and Tribal waterways.Share examples from regional experts on less impactful methods of extraction that demonstrate a responsible mining approach and have a proven track record of avoiding the detrimental impacts of mines to downstream waters.Collectively share information and perspectives over two days with the intent of identifying a set of shared goals and then develop a set of next steps to collaboratively reach those goals.Work together to create a draft resolution that could be shared with Tribes and First Nations as well as other regional partners that would address the shared goals and next steps.
