People, Pets Advised To Stay Out Of Four Mile Run After Sewage Release

ARLINGTON, VA — The Arlington Department of Environmental Services issued an advisory around 4 p.m. Sunday, warning people and pets to stay out of Four Mile Run, starting at the Bon Air Memorial Rose Garden due, to a sewage release into the stream. Shortly after 6 p.m., the county said a clog had been cleared from a sanitary sewer line and the stream was being flushed. People and pets should avoid entering Four Mile Run from Wilson Boulevard to the Potomac River for the next 48 hours, the county said. As of 6 p.m., no signs were up in the Bon Air Park or Bluemont Park areas along Four Mile Run, alerting people to stay out of the water. Several people at a picnic gathering in Bon Air Park, including children, were playing in the water. Patch told people in the water about the environmental alert issued by the county. Four Mile Run is a 9.2-mile-long tributary of the Potomac River that flows from Fairfax south through Arlington and Alexandria. For future incidents, residents should contact the Emergency Communications Center immediately at 703-558-2222 if they see pollution, dumping, discharge, or discoloration in an Arlington County stream.
