Officers Injured When Car Theft Suspect Rams Police Car: NRPD

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Once again, suspected car thieves that made the mistake of getting off the thruway in New Rochelle ended up in handcuffs, but these Newark individuals didn't go down without a fight, according to police. Thursday afternoon, New Rochelle police detectives spotted a Toyota Highlander with no license plates driving through a neighborhood on the southwest side of the city. When police tried to stop the SUV, it fled northbound on I-95. The detectives were able to follow the Highlander on I-95 without being noticed. The Toyota then exited the New England Thruway in Mamaroneck and then immediately returned to I-95 South. While traveling southbound between Exits 16 and 15 in New Rochelle, the SUV got stuck in stopped traffic. Detectives who were following called for more units to surround and box in the Toyota, but when the detectives pulled behind the suspect vehicle in an unmarked police car and attempted to pull the vehicle over, the suspects put their vehicle in reverse, and rammed the police car. Two officers in the car were injured, but they were still able to apprehend the suspects and place all four suspects in the car under arrest. The vehicle was later confirmed to be stolen out of New Jersey. Four people from Newark were taken into custody. Tariq Kyam, 56, Alex Carroll, 35, David Fate, 38and Kymeasha Selph, 34 were charged with felony criminal possession of stolen property. Kyam was also charged with felony assault in the second degree for injuring a police officer and unlawfully fleeing a police officer. Kyam, Carroll and Fate are all wanted by Saddle Brook, NJ police for six robberies, 1 armed robbery as well as motor vehicle thefts in four different counties in New Jersey. Extradition warrants are expected.
