FARMINGDALE, NY — Several Boy and Girl Scouts around Farmingdale Village have earned or are set to earn recognition, and there are several upcoming events in the village, according to Mayor Ralph Ekstrand. Girl Scout Cadette Troop 3076 visited Village Hall recently to learn about local government as one of the requirements to earn their democracy badge, according to Ekstrand. The mayor met with Girl Scouts Abby Malanga, Serena Lepik, and Amanda Piccolo so they could learn about the village's elected representatives and the functions that take place at Village Hall. The Girl Scouts asked Ekstrand questions about his leadership style, who inspires him, and other aspects of the mayoral position. The Hardscrabble Association of Girl Scouts hosted the annual Award and Bridging ceremony on May 26. According to the Farmingdale Hardscrabble Girl Scout Troop leaders, senior and ambassador Girl Scouts have the opportunity to earn the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. The Girl Scouts will find an issue they are passionate about and then tackle it by enacting change. The Gold Award take-action project is an 80-hour endeavor that educates others about the problem and ways to change things to make the world a better place. The end result is a sustainable effort that can continue long after project completion, which makes a difference not only locally in our community but can help globally as well. "On behalf of the Board of Trustees and myself, Congratulations to all Girl Scout award recipients, and to all Girl Scouts for your efforts and achievements!" Ekstrand said. An Eagle Scout Recognition and Hall of Fame Dinner is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at The Carltun at Eisenhower Park. The Boy Scouts of America Theodore Roosevelt Council, in partnership with the Arthur R. Eldred Chapter of the National Eagle Scouts Association, are planning the event. The event will honor "National Outstanding Eagle Scout Awardees", and "Nassau County Eagle Scout Hall of Fame Inductees," as well as celebrate Anniversary Eagle Classes, for 1972 (50 years), 1997 (25 years) and 2012 (10 years). "I am truly honored to be recognized as one of the Nassau County Hall of Fame Inductees at this event," Ekstrand wrote. "As they say, 'Once an Eagle, Always An Eagle.' On behalf of the Board of Trustees and myself, Congratulations to all Eagle Scout Awardees, Inductees and all Eagle Scouts/Scouts!" The Farmingdale School District hosted The Long Island Special Olympics New York Spring Games North on May 21. "The Long Island Special Olympics Spring Games were a success!" the school district wrote. "Farmingdale Schools hosted the competition that brought athletes, coaches, volunteers, and community members together. It was a spectacular day for everyone involved."
