Cop Injured After Rescuing Dog From Blazing Mercer County Home

MERCER COUNTY, NJ — A police officer from Ewing Township was hospitalized after she ran into a burning home to rescue a dog Thursday morning. Det. Julia Caldwell suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital for treatment and observation, Ewing Police said. Around 9 a.m. Thursday morning, Ewing police were notified of smoke conditions from 109 Browning Avenue. All residents were evacuated before police arrived, authorities said. The homeowner then told police the family dog was still inside the residence. Caldwell entered the home and was able to rescue the dog, police said. During the rescue Caldwell suffered smoke inhalation and was treated on scene by Ewing EMS and Capital Health Paramedics before being taken to the hospital for treatment and observation, authorities said. No other injuries were reported. Ewing Fire Department stations 30, 31, 33 responded to the scene and managed to extinguish the fire with help from the Trenton Fire Department Ladder 1 and Hamilton Fire Department Squad 12. According to an initial investigation by Ewing Fire Marshal Mike Nelson, the fire was deemed non-suspicious. The displaced residents are being offered assistance through the American Red Cross.
