Preserving our Trees in a Drought California is still in a very severe drought, and the summer heat is soon approaching! In the Monrovia, we have made great strides to help replenish our water supplies and conserve 10% of our water consumption. A lot of our conservation efforts are focused on outdoor irrigation which means turf, plants and trees. We need our trees and our trees need water. However, it is important that we use our water responsibility to avoid over-watering or wasting water in the process. Save our Water provides a few tips and tricks to responsibly water our lawns. Prioritize Your Trees - Trees are an investment and will require more water, time and money to replace a mature tree lost to drought than to keep one alive. Even though the City of Monrovia has imposed water restrictions, it's important to use water responsibly and help keep our trees alive! Check Your Soil - Use a long screwdriver and poke a hole in the soil. If the screwdriver passes easily, the soil is moist. If you can't poke a hole in at least 6", it's time to water. Limit Pruning - Avoid pruning or fertilizing during dry seasons. Lack of water and too much pruning can stress your tree. Fertilizing your tree will encourage leady growth which will require additional water. Use Mulch! - Placing mulch around your trees can help keep the moisture from evaporating. Mulch will not compete for water (like turf) and does not radiate heat (like rocks). Soak Slowly to Avoid Run-Off - Longer and slower soaks can allow water to penetrate deeper into the soil. Use a hose timer to avoid overwatering and run-off. SB1383 – What you need to know! Many of you have already heard the phrase SB1383, but what does it really mean? Check out the informational flyer below to get an overview of SB1383. At this point in time, City staff are working with our exclusive franchise hauler, Athens Services, to provide Monrovians with the best plan for the future. We want to ensure that our next steps fit the expectation and lifestyle of Monrovian residents before enacting change. However, if you would like to begin disposing of your edible food waste now, please separate your edible food in your GREEN bin. For more information on SB1383, contact Petra Beglarian at [email protected] or 626-932-5562. The Upper San Gabriel Water District will be offering a free virtual workshop to help residents navigate the world of compost. Tune in on June 9th from 12:00PM-1:00PM to learn more about techniques and tips to make compost, how to mulch to build healthy soil and more! Click here to register to save your spot! Tree Planting Program Draft A draft of the Tree Planting Plan (Plan) is now available for public comment and review. On November 2, the Monrovia City Council began developing the Plan, specifically for only that southern portion of Monrovia that has far fewer trees than the rest of Monrovia. Staff and the City's certified arborists have developed the Plan with the following goals/objectives: Plant native trees first, then trees that thrive in Southern California climate Increase shade canopy where possible, and plant large trees where possible without creating maintenance or hazardous conditions Avoid tree planting in areas where parkway, utility or rights-of-way conflicts exist Avoid planting fruit, palm trees or non-native tree species During the development of the Plan, the City Council also enacted emergency drought measures. The Council has serious concern about beginning the Plan at this time during a historic and unprecedented drought. However, developing the Plan now, so it is ready when Council deems it appropriate to proceed, is our desire. We ask you to review the Plan and share your thoughts, feedback and considerations before the Council decides to proceed and formally adopts the Plan. Monrovia Conserves Phase II of the Water Conservation Plan stipulates a 10% mandatory reduction in water consumption from each households same month billing period in 2020. For example, the first billing period in March will compare your usage from February of 2022 to your usage in February of 2020. Customers who fail to reduce their water usage by the required 10% will be billed a penalty of two times the cost of a water billing unit (748 gallons of water) for each unit, the standard penalty is $4.88 per unit in excess. Excess water usage penalties went into effect starting the first billing cycle in March 2022. Tools to Help You Conserve Water Rebates - Save $$ when you save H2O! Check the latest rebates offered by the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District. You may qualify for rebates for indoor and outdoor water-saving equipment for your home or business including turf removal or financial incentives for water efficient equipment or improvements! Upper District's Water Smart Home Program offers qualifying residents an opportunity to choose a variety of water conservation items to be installed at their home, free of charge, by EcoTech Services. The Water Conservation Kit is filled with tools, at no charge, to help make conserving water that much easier. Work Around Town Tree Trimming - The City's contracted tree trimming company, West Coast Arborists (WCA), has begun trimming trees in Grid 1. Grid 1 is the area between Myrtle Avenue and 5th Avenue above Foothill. WCA will begin trimming City Trees at the north end of Grid 1 and work their way down. All City trees are pruned on a regular basis using best practices from the international society of arboriculture. Trees are trimmed in a manner that will encourage good development while preserving their health, structure, and natural appearance. During the trimming, traffic control will be in place and minor traffic delays may occur. Please be mindful of all posted signage.
