Fatal traffic accidents appear to be on the decline in Denver this year, but recent data highlights the serious consequences that can come with a collision. A total of 38 people have been killed in traffic accidents this year, according to Streets Blog Denver. That puts the city on pace to see fewer than the 71 traffic deaths that occurred last year, likely at least in part because of stay at home orders and a shift to telework during the coronavirus pandemic. Car and truck drivers and passengers accounted for 17 of the traffic deaths so far this year, while collisions claimed the lives of 12 pedestrians during the same time. Another 6 motorcyclists, two scooter riders and one person on a bicycle have also been killed in crashes. The latest data comes as Denver Mayor Michael Hancock continues to push his Vision Zero action plan, aimed at eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries by 2030. A total of 61 people were killed in 2016, the year Hancock launched the action plan. The city pointed out at the time that its per capita traffic fatality rate was multiple times higher than those in places like Seattle and Minneapolis. Legal Rights in Traffic Accidents Traffic accident fatalities in Denver and around the world are not only tragic, but also preventable. Accidents are regularly caused by car, truck or motorcycle drivers who simply do not live up to their responsibility to operate their vehicles safely. Whether it is speeding, running a red light, drinking and driving or simply not staying alert and attentive, the consequences of this kind of negligence can be life altering. Colorado law gives the family of a person killed in a crash the right to seek just compensation from all who are responsible. Although the money damages available in wrongful death cases will not allow you to go back in time and stop the accident from happening, it can ease some of the financial burden that can come with losing a loved one. An experienced wrongful death attorney can help ensure your rights are properly upheld. How? First, a seasoned lawyer who typically handles personal injury and wrongful death cases will investigate the accident to identify those responsible and will work to build the strongest possible case for compensation. Part of the attorney’s work includes gathering evidence, such as video or camera footage, witness statements and police reports, as well as compiling medical records to detail the extent of the injuries caused by the crash. Do Not Delay in Seeking Legal Guidance If you have been injured - or lost a loved one - in an accident in Colorado, it is vital that you seek the assistance of an experienced accident attorney to explore all of your legal options. He or she will also guide you through the legal process to ensure you do not miss your opportunity to seek justice under the law. Unfortunately, there are time limitations to filing personal injury and wrongful death claims, so don’t delay.
