MIDDLETOWN, CT — A car that ended up in the Connecticut River early this morning is believed to have been stolen, with the driver of the vehicle still being sought, according to WTNH Channel 8. A dispatcher at the Middletown Police Department confirmed this morning officers are working to determine how a vehicle ended up in the river. While the investigation is ongoing, the dispatcher said no one was found inside the vehicle and there is a search ongoing. The police source said the vehicle was discovered and pulled from the river at about midnight Friday into early Saturday morning. Middletown police detectives told WTNH Channel 8 the car was stolen by suspect who lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the river, with authorities looking for the driver. The City of Middletown Professional Firefighters Local 1073 Facebook site also confirmed the overnight activity in the river, with the city's dive team assisting police in the investigation. "The mission of the dive team is to provide a coordinated effort to locate and remove a submerged victim from a body of water such as a lake, river, or pond," reads a description of the unit on the City of Middletown's website. According to the website, the dive team consists of 20 certified public safety divers and 10 certified dive tenders spread across the department's four shifts. Divers and tenders on duty at all hours of the day to respond if needed. The unit features a special "dive truck" that carries an inflatable boat and there's even a dive team boat docked on the Connecticut River, according to the city's website. Frequently, Middletown's unit is mobilized for situations outside the city, as it provides mutual aid to any communities requiring such a dive team. For the WTNH Channel 8 report, visit this link.
