HUNTINGTON, NY — Gold Star Battalion Beach in Huntington was closed to swimming because high levels of bacteria were found in the water, Suffolk health officials said Thursday.
Swimming in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, said Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott.
The beach will reopen when the level of bacteria decreases to a safe level, the county said.
West Meadow Beach in Stony Brook has reopened to swimming after a brief closure.
