WOODBRIDGE, NJ — As June is Pride Month, the Woodbridge Police Department reminded the public its police officers Minsal and Manzini represent the department as part of its LGBTQ+ liaison program. This is so members of the LGBTQ+ community can feel they have a safe place to report hate crimes or other crimes to. In January of 2022, Woodbridge Police Department launched the WPD Safe Place Program. The goals of this program are to: Deter hate crimesEncourage the reporting of hate crimesClearly demonstrate community support for and welcoming of LGBTQ+ community members.Compile and disseminate a comprehensive list of services and resources to assist LGBTQ+ community members. Woodbridge Police Dept. Safe Place decals will be prominently posted at the entrances of local businesses in town. There, hate crime victims can be assured that they will be assisted by staff in calling 911 or the non-emergency police department phone number. Victims will be allowed to remain in a Safe Place inside the business until police arrive. The victim will also be provided with resources and contact information for services associated with this community.
