OCEAN CITY, NJ — A former Ocean City Beach Patrol member and current teacher in the Pleasantville School District faces first degree sexual assault charges, the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office said.
Jonathan C. Howell, 40, of Marmora, is charged with first degree aggravated sexual assault, second degree sexual assault, second degree official misconduct and third degree endangering the welfare of a child, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland said.
Howell's charges are a result of investigations following April 2021 allegations against the OCBP, Sutherland said. Read More: Prosecutors Probe Allegations Against Ocean City Beach Patrol
Howell was taken into custody on June 2 and then taken to the Cape May County Correctional Facility pending court proceedings, Sutherland said. Authorities also executed an authorized search warrant at Howell's home in the 200 block of Regal Drive in Marmora.
A person convicted of a first degree crime is subject to a term of imprisonment of 10 to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison, Sutherland said. He also said that anyone convicted of a second degree crime is subject to a term of imprisonment of 5 to 10 years and third degree crimes are subject to three to five years in New Jersey State Prison.
