Press release from the Urbandale Community School District:
May 31, 2022
Webster Elementary students are taking the "7 Habits" from their "Leader in Me" program to a whole new level… life size! Through the vision of artist Doug Applegate, students participated in a school-wide mural painting project on May 26. "Buddy Classes" were scheduled throughout the day so older students could help younger students paint the murals. For example, a fourth grade class was paired with a first grade class.
At the start of each painting session, students were given instructions for how to paint the murals. Sections of each mural were coded with a number. The number corresponded to a particular paint color. As students rotated to various murals, they matched their paint color with the numbered section outlined in each mural. Once finished, the murals will be proudly displayed throughout the school.
Not only did Webster students create life-size artwork, but they continued learning life-size lessons about the importance of listening before they talk, having a plan, making responsible choices, getting work done first and then playing, working in harmony together, being considerate of others when finding solutions, and keeping a sense of balance in one's life. What a fantastic way to showcase the outstanding work of Webster students and the significant impact the "7 Habits" have in creating a school community where everyone feels like they can be a leader. The murals will most definitely be enjoyed for years to come. Well-done, Webster! We are #proudofU!
