Press release from the City of Long Beach: June 3, 2022 Long Beach, CA – The Long Beach Public Library's (Library) annual Summer Reading Program kicks off June 18, inviting readers of all ages to "Read Beyond the Beaten Path" and blaze new trails by reading books, completing activities, and enjoying free special events at all 12 Library locations. The Summer Reading Program, running June 18 through August 13, encourages participants to read five days a week for at least six weeks and complete activities, earning incentive prizes along the way. Online registration begins June 18, with in-person registration available beginning June 21 at any Library location. Residents can register and begin participation at any time during the program – but the earlier the registration, the more incentives to earn. "The Library's Summer Reading Program is something to look forward to each year," said Mayor Robert Garcia. "It offers a wide variety of free, family-fun activities, while encouraging Long Beach residents to read, learn, grow, and explore the world around them." To celebrate the launch of this year's program, each Library location will host a music performance during the first week of the program (June 21-24), courtesy of the Music Center of Los Angeles' Art Grown program. Performers include INCA the Peruvian Ensemble, DIAVOLO/Architecture in Motion, Chameleons Mime Theatre, and Boxtales, among others. As part of the Summer Reading Program, each Library location will also host numerous special events throughout the summer, including magic shows, music, wildlife encounters and more. For teens and adults specifically, STEM workshops, book talks and other programs will be offered to spur exploration and discovery. To see the full calendar of special events, visit the Library's website at lbpl.org. "Our Summer Reading Program is a great way for families to maintain a routine of reading at home, which is key for students returning to school in the fall," said Acting Library Director Christine Hertzel. "By offering special event performances, prizes and activity ideas, we're encouraging families to read, learn and explore together all summer long." The Summer Reading Program is made possible in part by the Long Beach Public Library Foundation, thanks to generous support from the Port of Long Beach and the International Paper Foundation. These contributions enable the Library to offer books and other incentives to program participants, as well as provide special performances by professional family entertainers and educators.
