Description
Following a two-year in-person pause due to the pandemic that featured virtual and drive-thru Relays, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Harford County returns to Concord Point Park in beautiful Havre de Grace on Saturday, June 25. ACS and Relay believe that no one should face cancer alone! The event is open to the community! See www.relayforlife.org/harfordmd. Janyce Smalley Relays for many reasons: her husband, a Vietnam veteran, quit smoking in 1992, but was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 1994 – not because of his smoking history, but because an astute doctor urged him to be checked since Vietnam vets are at higher risk of bladder cancer due to their war exposure to Agent Orange. Her husband was treated successfully. "We were very, very fortunate," said Janyce. She said, "We don't want to forget what a beast #cancer is. Relay is a special way that is important to me to honor survivors and those who have passed from cancer," said Janyce, who lost her brother-in-law to brain cancer, her mother to lung cancer (involving a grueling journey), and both a cousin and a grandmother to liver cancer. There also have been skin cancers in the family. "I want to work towards a better future, which is what Relay does," said Janyce. "What I strive for is a cure for cancer. I'm happy to raise funds for research to fuel the work of scientists smarter than me and to help friends with resources through their suffering from cancer." As an experienced caregiver, she added, "It can be torturous what the caregivers bear. At Relay, we remember loved ones, celebrate the survivors and the caregivers." Janyce is a member of the #RFL Cranberry Crushers team plus volunteers for the survivors and caregiver luncheon. She's also involved with the Heralds of Hope Relay team's fundraising yard sale at Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, Sat., 6/11, 8a-3p. Tables rent for just $10. Stop by the sale to support RFL or contact [email protected] to reserve a space. Art, craft, & direct sales vendors welcome.
